One of my favorite instruments is the taiko drum and if I hear of a performance that I can attend, I am there with bells and whistles. As part of Brisbane City Hall’s Concert Series, Australia’s leading taiko group, TaikOz joined with Melbourne DJ/Producer, DJ M-Royce to create TaikoDeck. The collaboration featured taiko drums, traditional Japanese bamboo flutes, bells, gongs, and cymbals. The largest taiko drum is the odaiko (Grand Drum) that weighs 250 kg (over 550 lbs) which means the drummer must have strength but also endurance. The best part is that the collaboration was between siblings. One of the TaikOz members and the DJ are brothers! A fun performance where the East meets the West. The performance was exciting and watching it in a jam packed Brisbane City Hall was just icing on the cake! Being so hot, Paul, Edward, and I decided to treat ourselves to some ice cream following the performance.
