Today was the final Lord Mayor’s Friendship Ceremony of the year. It was held at South Bank Institute of Technology (SBIT). Prior to the ceremony, a local artist performed music as attendees arrive and check-in. Then, we were so fortunate to have Aboriginal dancers perform for us giving insight into a unique aspect of traditional, indigenous Australian culture that we wouldn’t normally see. We had a few speakers including the Lord Mayor Quirk’s welcome speech to all the international students. He wants us to make Brisbane our second home and gives us a personally signed Certificate of Friendship. I think it’s so amazing that he takes time out of his schedule for the international students who call Brisbane home for one to several years.

SBIT also had a former student share her inspirational story. She moved to Brisbane from Korea to achieve her dream of becoming a nurse. She is currently living her dream and working at the hospital here in Brisbane with wonderful colleagues. Hearing her story was a great reminder to me that in order for me to achieve my dreams, I must keep my eyes on the goal! I hope that you’ll be encouraged from her story as well and have a sense of renewal and encouragement for your own personal goals.
